COVID-19 Update: January 25, 2022

Quick update regarding COVID and Diabetes onset.


It is not uncommon for a viral infection to trigger the onset of diabetes. This week, about 4 different research studies have come out confirming that getting COVID can trigger diabetes, both type 1 and type 2. Increases in the number of children reporting type 1 diabetes over the course of the pandemic have been particularly high. Diabetes is a chronic condition. Just a quick reminder that fatality is not the only measure of a disease.


If your child gets COVID here are some things to watch for afterwards as possible early indicators of diabetes:

I had a niece you got mono and later was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes which was likely triggered by mono. I am not surprised by similar potential outcome with Covid.

Lisa, it's weird isn't it? There may be some way to know which viruses will do it and which won't, I am not well versed enough to know that -but observationally, what I see is if the virus is one that is more series (such as mono) then we tend to see the trigger more than if it is a minor virus. I have no evidence of that, purely observational.
