7 Million American Cases, Pediatric update, depression and hospitalizations. It's a heavy day.
The US hit 7 million cases over the weekend and 200k deaths. This indicates we are moving too fast again. In fact, nearly 1/2 of the US is now reporting a rise in cases with the mid-west (Wisconsin, South Dakota, Iowa, and Kansas) among the highest. Those states are also reporting positivity rates around 15%. Increases are not completely shocking considering the Labor Day holiday but it is an indication that we need to remain vigilant in our efforts. You may recall back in the summer that the CDC predicted we would hit 200k deaths by the election - which is another indication that we are moving too fast given we hit it early.
Pediatric cases now account for 10% of total cases - however, they seem to be leveling out over the last week which is good news. Pediatrics still account for a low number of hospitalizations (about 1.7%) and children makeup only 0.07% of all COVID deaths. However, the cumulative cases per 100k is now 728.5 per 100k. It is important to note that states are not all reporting "pediatrics" the same way, some states include 0-20 as pediatric while others report only 0-14 and any combo in between.
The number of American's experiencing depression has jumped from 8.5% to 27.8% according to a study published in JAMA.
About 5% of people who go to the ER with mild COVID symptoms and are sent home end up hospitalized within 72 hours - 95% do not.
FINAL THOUGHTS: Monday is certainly making its presence known. Hopefully, you had some time to unwind this weekend. Personally, I find the crisp cool air of fall to be invigorating and full of hope and promise. We face this week together, unified in our efforts, our fatigue, and our hope. Don't be discouraged, we are in this together.
